The Inaugural New Norcia Studies Day was given on Saturday 21st November 1992, to an audience of 120 people from wide ranging backgrounds; historians, anthropologists, librarians, archivists, religious and  'non-titled' but 'interested in New Norcia' people.

The Studies Day was the brain child of Father Placid Spearritt, Abbot of the Benedictine Community of New Norcia. The growth of the idea belongs to the Archives Research and Publications Committee for the Benedictine Community which saw the value of the exercise an assisted its maturity.

The Committee is chaired by Abbot Placid. Its present members are Fr David Barry, Dom Christopher Power, Prior and Procurator for the Benedictine Community, SR Anne Carter IBVM, Mr Douglas Gordon and Mrs Wendy McKinley, Archivist for New Norcia and Secretary for the ARP Committee.

The ARP Committee seeks to assist the Community in the management, development and access to its written and pictorial records.

New Norcia Studies Day is designed to present papers on a variety of topics concerning New Norcia and the Benedictine Community. It also covers subjects which are relevant to the operation of archives and New Norcia as a whole entity. Preference is given to papers researched from the archives to give a broad over view of the type of records available at New Norcia.

The Studies Day is held in the middle months of each year and New Norcia Studies Day has come to stay.

The ARP Committee is committed to the publication of the papers from New Norcia Studies Day in the 'New Norcia Studies Journal'. The Day's papers are the core, and other papers of interest are added. Sr Anne Carter IBVM is the present editor. New Norcia Studies Journal No.1 was published in April 1993. No. 14 is due out in 2006.
