For Art and religious educators and their colleagues.

The Lecture - Seeing Salvation
In the last ten years there has been a renewal of interest in the spiritual sources and possibilities of art. The founding members of the Blake Prize for religious Art, Michael Scott and Peter Kenny, believe that religious art should explore ‘recognizable subject matter or...traditional symbols of religion.’ However, in contemporary art a broader notion of ‘spirituality’ has developed, involving an awareness of human creative potential and a sense of transcendence through artistic expression. This lecture will look at the way a number of Christian artists have addressed important issues in their work, such as art and spirituality, personal religious expression and the Western legacy of Christian art, iconography and symbolism.

Sunday 17th June 2001, at 1.30pm in St. Gertrude's College, New Norcia

RSVP to Michelle Freeman on 08 9654 8173

The Lecture
The lecture will be based around the history of the Blake Prize. It will focus on some of the winning paintings and consider some of the important conflicts associated with the prize in the last fifty years, such as the tensions between creative expression and propaganda, representation and abstraction.
This lecture will look at the way in which the prize has been transformed during this period and it will attempt to assess the impact of the prize upon the Churches and religious art generally in Australia.

The Blake Prize
The Blake Prize, first awarded in 1951, is one of Australia’s most respected visual art awards. This non-denominational religious art prize is unique in the world, being open to all strands of religious and spiritual ideas by which society is shaped. It includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, tapestry, photography and other media. Of the 330 submitted works this year, 20 including the winning entry have been selected to come to Western Australia and will be exhibited exclusively at the New Norcia Art Gallery and Museum until 16th September 2001.
