The Institute for Benedictine Studies is an initiative of the Benedictine Community of New Norcia to offer opportunities for intellectual and spiritual development and enrichment, within the Benedictine tradition. It draws its inspiration from the long tradition of monastic studies within the worldwide family of Benedictine communities, and builds upon the rich cultural, intellectual, spiritual and liturgical heritage embodied at New Norcia.
The Institute seeks to offer Benedictine hospitality through ecumenical and interfaith dialogue. As such, the Institute welcomes the participation of people of all faiths and from any educational background.
The courses and retreats offered by the Institute are typically weekend events, incorporating accommodation in the monastery guesthouse, with the opportunity for immersion in the prayer life of the monks. Presenters of courses and retreats include, in addition to the monks of New Norcia themselves, a variety of specialists from other institutions, of both national and international stature. Additionally, the facilities of the Institute, particularly New Norcia’s extensive library, are available by negotiation to research students and faculty members for periods of intensive research or as part of a sabbatical program.
The New Norcia Institute for Benedictine Studies offers an environment conducive to prayer, study and reflection with excellence in teaching and research. In this atmosphere, the Institute aims to encourage participants at all stages of life to reflect on their journey of faith with the pastoral support of rich traditions in prayer, discernment and discipleship, whether as lay people, professed religious, academics, or in ordained ministry.
