Fr Lesmes was born in 1874 near Burgos, in Northern Spain. As a young man he entered the famous monastery of Monserrat, where he displayed considerable talent in drawing and painting.

After further training in Rome, he was loaned to New Norcia to help Bishop Torres in his work of decorating the buildings of the town.

He arrived at New Norcia in 1913 and worked prodigiously for the next eight years.

The corpus of his work includes hundreds of drawings and six large oil paintings for the church, together with the very large painting over the altar at St Ildephonsus' College. He also produced extensive wall paintings, most notably in the College Chapels and in the Music Room of the Monastery. Most of these are religious works, and they still survive at New Norcia.

In 1921 he left New Norcia and returned to Spain. However, some years later he embarked on another special decoration assignment, this time at the monastery of San Beda in Manila in the Philippines. He died there in 1945.
