The library focuses on theological subjects, but a very wide range of other topics is also represented in the collection. There is an abundance of Catholic theological works in Latin, Spanish and English, with fewer books in other European languages.
Our purchasing budget is very limited, so the coverage even of monasticism and theology is patchy. On the other hand, many of the books are probably the only copies in Australia. The collection is continually expanding; as well as purchases, we receive many items from donations and bequests, which account in part for its eclectic character
A particular strength is the collection of over 2000 volumes published between 1507 and 1800. An incomplete listing of these can be found in John Hay and David Bean, The Early Imprints at New Norcia. A Bibliographical study of pre-1801 books in the Benedictine Monastery at New Norcia, Western Australia (Western Library Studies, 9) The Library, Western Australian Institute of Technology, Perth, 1986. Corrections and additions to that list are incorporated in this database.
