Synergy: Song, Space and Text working together in Christian Worship Today. A recent highlight in the liturgical life of the community at New Norcia was Synergy, the liturgy symposium held on May 27th. Acclaimed composer Christopher Willcock SJ, celebrated literature scholar and social critic Veronica Brady IBVM and renowned architect Arthur Andronas joined 100 participants to explore the art of good liturgy. Christopher Willcock presented the session “Hymns Old and New, Good and Bad” which gave us a practical guide to making good choices from the wide repertoire available to us. Veronica Brady spoke on “Liturgy, Poetry and Prayer: Ways of Naming and Praising the World” and challenged us as contemporary Christians to remember deeply traditional ways – repentance, reconciliation and blessing. In “Exploring Liturgical Space” Arthur Andronas presented examples of his work from St. Patrick’s Cathedral and St. Francis’ Church Melbourne where he reworked traditional spaces with the insights from Vatican II. A highlight of the day was the afternoon choral workshop to learn “Fraction Rite New Norcia” which had been commissioned for the event. With music by Christopher Willcock and text by Veronica Brady it is a living example of the arts working together and was enthusiastically received by the 100 participants gathered to sing. The final session was the Artists in conversation, chaired by Abbot Placid Spearritt. The participants raised thoughtful questions and showed a real desire to read the signs of the times and serve our communities in faithful ways. The symposium culminated in the celebration of Ascension Sunday mass. Soloist Coralie Kan sang the world premiere of the Fraction Rite, joined by a handpicked choir and the assembly. The packed church sang enthusiastically with the composer there to conduct them, and trumpet and organ blasts punctuated the praise.
