New Norcia Benedictine Community

Current Projects

In 2011, the restoration project for the town is the Spanish Chapel in the monastery.

The Chapel was built in the early 1900s as a place of prayer for the monks. Not only is the Chapel a visually stunning room, it is also an excellent example of the work of three men who are responsible for much of the fine work in New Norcia today. Juan Casellas the wood carver built the benches and the wood panelling; Fr Lesmes Lopez the artist painted the murals and Br Salvador Alberich the gold leaf work that adorns the chapel.

The chapel is still used by the monks for Chapter meetings and is a firm favourite with visitors to the town, however over the years a significant amount of damage has occured in the room and the time has now come to restore the room to its former glory.

Contact the Public Relations Manager on 08 9654 8371 or communications@newnorcia.wa.edu.au if you would like to contribute to the restoration of the Spanish Chapel.
